Environmental Commitment, On the Road and Offclose
At Toyota, we're committed to environmental stewardship — not only through our vehicles, manufacturing facilities and offices — but also in communities around the world. When the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) asked for our assistance in transforming the energy system in the Galapagos Islands, we rolled up our sleeves to help. The goal was to help preserve the unique and fragile ecosystem of the island group made famous by Charles Darwin’s research there 200 years ago. Working closely with the Ecuadorian government, Toyota and WWF developed a 10-year plan that focused on more sustainable and renewable energy sources. The plan led to a redesign of the main fuel-handling facility on Baltra Island, and the implementation of oil and waste recycling programs. In 2008, the redesigned fuel-handling facility was awarded ISO 14001 certification, verifying that it meets this international standard of environmental soundness. Today, Toyota continues to partner with WWF on programs across the U.S. and in the Galapagos.
