TogetherGreen Fellow Advocates Diversity in Sustainabilityclose
TogetherGreen Fellow and Portland resident Marcelo Bonta has a goal: to ensure that the “green” movement is inclusive of people from all ethnicities and backgrounds. Marcelo believes that conservation needs to be more than just a movement: it should be engrained in every person, policy, and activity. To achieve his vision, Marcelo founded “The Center for Diversity & the Environment” and “The Young Environmental Professionals of Color.” These initiatives are designed to spark a new, more diverse environmental movement.
Toyota was so inspired by Marcelo’s work that we are directly supporting his “Diversifying the Environmental Movement” forum. The ambitious program will bring together conservation communities to find solutions to help cross the racial and cultural divide in the environmental movement.
TogetherGreen, a partnership between Audubon and Toyota, aims to provide inspiration, leadership and opportunities that motivate people everywhere to take action at home, in their communities and beyond to improve the health of our environment. In 2008, Audubon and Toyota launched the initiative to support conservation projects, train environmental leaders, and offer volunteer opportunities that significantly benefit the environment. Funded by a $20 million Toyota gift to Audubon, the largest in the conservation group’s long history, TogetherGreen is now active in 182 cities in 49 states.
